What is Reticle?

A reticle, or reticule also known as a graticule, is a pattern of fine lines or markings built into the eyepiece of an optical device such as a telescopic sight, spotting scope, theodolite, optical microscope or the screen of an oscilloscope, to provide measurement references during visual inspections.

Pattern of Reticle

There are many variations of reticle pattern; this article concerns itself mainly with the most rudimentary reticle: the crosshair. Crosshairs are typically represented as a pair of perpendicularly intersecting lines in the shape of a cross, “+”, though many variations of additional features exist including dots, posts, concentric circles/horseshoes, chevrons, graduated markings, or a combination of above.
Most commonly associated with telescopic sights for aiming firearms, crosshairs are also common in optical instruments used for astronomy and surveying, and are also popular in graphical user interfaces as a precision pointer.

• What reticle for deer hunting?
  For most of my hunting needs, I’ve relied on another style of reticle: the duplex. Essentially an improved crosshair with heavier (meaning thicker or bolder) exterior lines, the duplex reticle still contains a fine crosshair at center.
• What type of reticle is best?
  If you often shoot over varying distances and want a reticle that keeps up with your needs, the BDC reticle is your go-to choice. This type of reticle features additional horizontal lines or dots under the center crosshair, each representing a certain distance.
• What is the most common reticle?
  The Minute of Angle (MOA) style reticles are probably the most popular. Many American hunters know that one click on their rifle scope turret is equal to 1/4″ at 100 yards. Since the adjustment value is finer than MRAD, you have a bit more precision, especially at closer ranges.
